Very short post on a long weekend...

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving!  I have almost no time to write, but wanted to get these titles down before I forgot what the books were about!  I’ve read three books since my last post.  The first was for my book club, The Hunter by Irish “Queen of Crime” author Tana French, which was fantastic!  This is the second in the “Cal Hooper” series, and I would recommend reading the first one before tackling this one, although this was better than the first.  Funny thing, we were actually supposed to read Book 3 in this series, The Keeper, but half of us read this one and half read book 3; fortunately, we all enjoyed them.

The next was The Infinite Sadness of Small Appliances by Canadian author Glenn Dixon, which is set in the near future when smart appliances take care of everything and society is run by the Grid, a database that uses algorithms to make decisions.  I loved the title, and while it took me a bit to get into it, I absolutely loved this gentle fable, this cautionary tale, and love letter to books, reading, arts and culture.  I would highly recommend this easy yet complex read to anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction, but this isn’t quite the hit-you-over-head type of dystopian that some novels are.

And this morning I finished Republic of Glass by award-winning Quebec author Catherine Leroux.  This was a hit-you-over-the-head dystopian fiction dealing with “solutions” for homelessness and the power of language to both manipulate and reveal truth.  I found it a bit confusing to read, but am thankful to have stuck with it, as some parts were amazing, particularly Leroux’s use of language to paint the perfect, sometimes stark, picture for the reader.

That’s all for today.  Hope you’ve had a good long weekend and have found many things to be thankful for!

Bye for now… Julie
